The international commission for the protection of the Danube was
established last year after a convention on the river's protection,
signed in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1994, came into effect.
According to the head of the Croatian delegation, Zeljko Ostojic,
the meeting will tackle the implementation of the mentioned
convention, as well as a work programme for 1999.
The programme covers joint monitoring, water quality data
gathering and processing, decreasing the river's pollution, and
establishing alarm calls in case of sudden pollution with possible
transborder consequences.
The participants today also discussed the establishment of a Danube
Fund which would collect Danube River countries' contributions
aimed at the financing of key objects on their territory intended
for the protection of the Danube from pollution.
