the country in bringing its policy for the environmental protection
closer to the European practice, said leaders of the team of the
Environmental Performance Review (EPR) and Croatian hosts at the

Since 1998 Croatia has been included into the programme of
evaluation of environmental protection (EPR) for central and
eastern European countries. The aim of the programme is to assist
the countries in transition in better protection and management of
the nature and environment.
We did not come because we know better than you but we came to hear
from you about the situation in Croatia, the head of the EPR team,
and a member of the UNECE department for environment, Andreas
Kahnert, said during today's session in Zagreb.
He announced EPR experts would visit Croatian offices and
institutions charged with the protection of the environment. They
would try to gather relevant data from experts, officials, local
authorities, and non-governmental organisations.
The EPR mission, consisting of 16 members from western, central and
eastern European countries will convey experiences from other
States into Croatia as well.
After the collection of information, the mission will evaluate the
situation in Croatia and give recommendations in a report which
should be released this autumn.
Kahnert explained that the environmental protection is a pan-
European issue which is important for all European countries.
In the 9-18 March visit the mission members will hold plenary and
expert sessions and meetings with Croatian experts in certain
fields.
The deputy head of the Croatian office for the environmental
protection, Gordana Valcic, acquainted the guests with the
situation, guidelines and priorities in this sector as well as on
the Croatian legislation concerning the environmental
protection.
