BUDAPEST, Feb 27 (Hina) - The newly elected assembly of the Croatian
National Self-Government in Hungary on Saturday held a constituent
session at which Mijo Karagic was re-elected assembly president.
In the next mandate the assembly will work towards creating
conditions for the Croats' cultural autonomy in Hungary, i.e. help
them assume administration of Croatian cultural institutions and
schools in Hungary, Karagic said.
To effect some of the forthcoming tasks, changes in a 1993 law on
minorities are necessary, as well as in some other acts, primarily
those referring to financing which, it was said at today's session,
have already been announced by Hungarian authorities.
The Croatian minority is also advocating the election of a
representative for the Hungarian parliament.
The minority also sees the possibility of lobbying for the
interests of Croatia and its regions through Hungary's announced
and expected Euro-Atlantic integration.
The assembly also concluded the Croatian minority in Hungary
expected further and more consistent assistance from the homeland,
as well as more active participation in the economic and cultural
cooperation between Croatia and Hungary.
