IZETBEGOVIC SUPPORTS SPECIAL STATUS FOR SANDZAK

SARAJEVO, Feb 22 (Hina) - Bosnian Presidency member Alija Izetbegovic said he personally supported "every legitimate demand" of Bosnian Muslims in the Serbian region of Sandzak aimed at improving their current situation in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Discussing the Sandzak issue in an interview published by Sarajevo magazine "Ljiljan" on Monday, the Bosnian Muslim leader reminded the Party of Democratic Action had demanded cultural autonomy for the south-eastern Yugoslav province populated by Bosnian Muslims way back in 1990. Izetbegovic assessed the priority at present was to have Milosevic's regime reinstate local self-government abolished in Sandzak two years ago. He however refuted accusations by Yugoslav authorities that separatist plans were at stake in the Sandzak issue. "Seeking special status, Sandzak is not after the break-up of the present Yugoslavia, nor a change of the state borders. Allegations about separatism have obviously been fabricated towards political disqualification and pressure," the Bosnian Muslim leader said. Izetbegovic dismissed the possibility of resolving the Sandzak issue by a territory exchange. (hina) ha jn
