ANKARA, Feb 11 (Hina) - Croatian and Turkish Presidents on Thursday
supported the work the Croatian-Turkish business council as the way
for fostering the economic cooperation between the two countries.
We expect from the business council to have more efficient and
active role in the assessment of the potential and in the
determination of business spheres which offer attractive
opportunities in our countries, said Turkish President Suleyman
Demirel at the ceremonial dinner of the council.
The council gathered Turkish businessmen and over 30
representatives of Croatian companies at Thursday's session.
The current commodity trade is far from the potential of both
countries, Demirel said adding that the short-term goal should be
trade valued 100 million US dollars and about US$ 500 million in the
medium-term plan.
He pointed to the significance of the development of the regional
trading and economic cooperation as the opportunity for better
competitiveness in the globalised world economy.
Croatian President Franjo Tudjman said the bilateral relations
should not be restricted to the commodity trade.
It is necessary to create conditions for long-term and permanent
ties between the two economies in technical and technological
industrial cooperation, joint production and joint investment, he
explained.
In the future these relations should open broader opportunities,
and a treaty on free trade may contribute to this effort. We can see
interests of the two economies in such agreement as well as the
confirmation of Croatia's orientation toward promoting economic
ties with countries in the Mediterranean and Central Europe, our
natural geographic region, the Croatian President said.
He added that Thursday's talks on the development of traffic
connection between the two countries should be materialised by
establishing the regular shipping between Croatian and Turkish
ports and the road and railway connection of the two countries as
well as by transit systems toward west Europe and the Middle East.
