ZAGREB, Feb 9 (Hina) - The visit of representatives of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), United Nations and the Council of Europe was fruitful, the OSCE Mission's head in Croatia, Tim Guldimann, told
reporters on Tuesday. The greatest value of the visit is that, in their joint appearance, representatives of international institutions unanimously conveyed to Croatia their concern about the slackened pace in the fulfilment of commitments in the last six months, said Are Jostein Nordheim, representative of Germany, the country chairing the OSCE. ZAGREB, Feb 9 (Hina) - The visit of representatives of the
Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), United
Nations and the Council of Europe was fruitful, the OSCE Mission's
head in Croatia, Tim Guldimann, told reporters on Tuesday.
The greatest value of the visit is that, in their joint appearance,
representatives of international institutions unanimously
conveyed to Croatia their concern about the slackened pace in the
fulfilment of commitments in the last six months, said Are Jostein
Nordheim, representative of Germany, the country chairing the
OSCE.
Croatia has confirmed its commitment in principle to fulfil its
obligations, Guldimann said, adding that Croatian representatives
had handed the international representatives new documents, the
content of which he declined to comment on.
The delegation is leaving Croatia with indications of "new steps",
for example, in the judiciary and the media. However, they are
leaving Croatia without clear assurances with regard to changes to
the election law.
Council of Europe representative Hans Peter Furrer called on the
Croatian Opposition representatives to participate in the work of
the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly and its bodies.
Furrer announced a meeting with the European Union in Strasbourg on
Wednesday, at which a joint programme of support for the media in
Croatia will be prepared.
OSCE representative for media freedom Freimut Duve suggested a
method for solving the problem of the largest press distributor
"Tisak", which caused serious financial problems to many press
publishers by not paying them for sold newspapers.
Those abusing the market would be taken before a court, because it
is not their money, said Duve. A centralised distribution of the
press should not be under state control, he added.
