In the first nine months, $5.7 billion worth of goods was imported, a 1.7 percent increase against 1999. As a result of such trends, the trade deficit dropped by a mere one percent and totals a high $2.4 billion, with export covering 57.6 percent of import. Export to Italy, Croatia's premier foreign trade partner, rose by a
high 35.8 percent, to $745 million. Export to Germany, worth $470
million, marked a 7.9 percent drop. Export to Austria, Croatia's
third foreign trade partner, rose by 11.3 percent to $215 million.
Export to countries of the Central European Free Trade Agreement
rose by 6.2 percent, with 79 percent referring to neighbouring
Slovenia. In this year's first nine months, $349 million worth of
goods were exported to the western neighbour, an increase of 6.1
percent.
Export to eastern neighbour Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to
drop, by 15 percent in the first nine months, to $335 million.
