ZAGREB, Aug 27 (Hina) - A wildfire in the Dubrovnik area devastated a large part of a world-famous botanical garden in the town of Trsteno on Sunday morning. Over a half of this unique Arboretum was engulfed by the blaze. The fire
threatened the garden last night but fire-fighters who had made firebreaks earlier poured water over it overnight. However, the blaze, fanned by a strong wind, arrived from the direction of Brsecina and caught the garden from the sea-side stretch. Centuries-old palms, exotic plants and parks were being burnt and then two fire-fighting planes came to support exhausted fire-fighters in their efforts to extinguish the blaze. After the two-hour battle, a worse tragedy was averted. The situation in Trsteno is going back to normal, although fires on surrounding hills are active. However, the blaze, fanned by a strong wind, arrived from the
direction of Brsecina and caught the garden from the sea-side
stretch. Centuries-old palms, exotic plants and parks were being
burnt and then two fire-fighting planes came to support exhausted
fire-fighters in their efforts to extinguish the blaze. After the
two-hour battle, a worse tragedy was averted.
The situation in Trsteno is going back to normal, although fires on
surrounding hills are active.
The traffic was also back to normal on late Sunday morning.
The devastating wildfire swept along the 20-kilometre-long section
of the Adriatic highway in this part of Croatia overnight. Nearby
business facilities were burnt to the ground. Fortunately, no human
casualties were reported. Only one fire-fighters sustained light
injuries at the Dubravica fire site.
A strong gale, which started to blow last night, fuelled fires in
the Dubrovnik area posing an additional hindrance to fire-
fighters' operations.
