Friday was extremely difficult for firefighters in the area of the central Adriatic city of Split. The most difficult situation was reported in Lokva Rogoznica, from where 1,000 tourists and locals had to be evacuated shortly after midnight. Croatia's head firefighting commander Mladen Jurin told Hina he could not remember a night like this taking place before, adding the blaze in Rogoznica was spreading on an area of more than eight kilometres including a part of the Adriatic highway, jeopardising houses. "It seems that the fire has been brought under control," Jurin said on Friday morning and added people were returning to their houses. He stressed the blaze would remain under control if the wind did not pick up. The fire has burned down about 1,000 hectares
