ZAGREB, Aug 24 (Hina) - This year in Croatia, namely by August 20, there were 8,312 registered fires, including 7,068 caused by people's negligence, the Croatian Firefighting Association reported Thursday. Despite such a great number
of fires and lack of firefighting equipment, firefighters demonstrated great professionalism in putting out fires, representatives of the Firefighting Association told a press conference in Zagreb. In relation to 1999, when out of 5,332 fires, 2,943 broke out in the open, this year 5,843 fires broke out in the open. Apart from professional and voluntary firefighting units from the Adriatic Coast, fires are also being put out by 360 firefighters from inland. According to data of the Croatian Forest Management, 538 fires spread on forest and had consumed about 20,000 hectares of wood land.
