ZAGREB, July 13 (Hina) - Results of this year's wheat harvest are better than expected, but a deficit of 96,000 tonnes of wheat was found out in commodity stockpiles. About 100,000 tonnes of wheat were stolen from this country,

ZAGREB, July 13 (Hina) - Results of this year's wheat harvest are
better than expected, but a deficit of 96,000 tonnes of wheat was
found out in commodity stockpiles. About 100,000 tonnes of wheat
were stolen from this country, Croatia's Prime Minster Ivica Racan
told the Government at its session on Thursday.
Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic precisely cited 13 firms in charge
of storing commodities where losses of wheat had appeared.
Unfortunately, wheat is not the only problem, a deficit in
commodities of flesh, flour, corn and such items has also been
established, he added.
The abuse of the institute 'state-run commodity stockpiles'
requires a change in the model, and the Government would advocate
the market-bound model which should impose the order in comparison
to theft and crime which the old model rendered possible, Premier
Racan said.
The deficit was established after the Government decided to grant a
business of wheat export to two firms in the beginning of July.
Owing to the losses, only 74,000 tonnes were available to be given
to "Agrokor" and "IN-CUBO" for export, and the rest to the amount on
which the Government had already agreed with the two companies
should be ensured by the purchase from small farms.
The Government authorised the Public Works Minister to conclude an
annex to the Framework Agreement signed with a U.S. company,
Bechtel. Under the annex, the Bosiljevo-Sveti Rok motorway (an
investment worth 719 million dollars) should be constructed at
stages. At the first stage, a half of the motorway should be built
(although preparations would be made for the whole project). The
amount of about 148 million dollars should be saved for another
section from Sveti Rok to a destination (towards Split) which could
be reached with such sum of money.
The reason for changes in the plans for the motorway's construction
was an assessment that only in 13 years the intensity of the traffic
along the 138-kilometre-long Bosiljevo-Sveti Rok highway would
reach a satisfactory level.
In case a substantial step forward occurs in the intensity of
traffic we shall be able to decide on the construction of the entire
motorway, Public Works and Reconstruction Minister Radimir Cacic
said. Besides, a road from Zagreb via Plitvice Lakes to Split is
being reconstructed, he added.
