Lord Johnston expressed satisfaction with ongoing political
changes in Croatia, but also observed that political tensions were
mounting.
Sabor Speaker Tomcic said this was the result of the dynamics of the
political life and efforts to as soon as possible achieve the key
goals: economic recovery, overcoming consequences of the war, and
joining the community of European peoples.
Tomcic informed his guest about Sabor's frisky legislative
activity, especially as regards human and minority rights, as well
as bills which are in the adoption procedure, such as a bill on
Croatian Radio Television, which is aimed at establishing a free
and public central medium. Tomcic said that all laws needed for
adjusting Croatia's legislation to European legislative standards
would be adopted by the end of 2000.
He also pointed to the need of assistance in the development of
Croatia's economy and refugee return. Croatia also expects
assistance from Stability Pact programmes, he added.
The two officials also discussed the political situation in the
region.
Lord Johnston today also met representatives of parliamentary
committees on foreign affairs and interparliamentary cooperation.
Johnston will on Tuesday address the House of Representatives at
the beginning of the fifth session.
