ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - A working meeting among ministries was held
Wednesday at the Foreign Ministry with the attendance of the
Council of Europe chief legal director Guy de Vela.
The meeting focused on Council of Europe conventions and the
harmonisation of the Croatian legislature with European
standards.
"We expect the meeting to yield a further mobilisation of all
ministries and government colleagues in the context of our
preparations for the European Union, and of course, the big process
of accessing all Council of Europe conventions," head of the
Foreign Ministry department for the EU, Council of Europe and
regional initiatives, Andrej Plenkovic, said at the beginning of
talks.
De Vela is visiting Croatia from May 22 to 24, and addressed the
meeting, saying, this was the right moment to discuss the
achievements and potentials regarding the signing and ratifying
Council of Europe conventions.
Croatia has so far ratified 47 Council of Europe conventions ... and
I congratulate it, he said.
Croatia became a full member of the Council of Europe on November 6,
1996, and has so far signed and/or ratified 56 conventions and
protocols, as well as entered four partial agreements with the
Council of Europe.
The goal of de Vela's visit to Croatia is to get insight into and
promote Croatia's legal cooperation with the Council of Europe.
This working meeting was organised with the intention to identify
the so far signed and/or ratified Council of Europe's legal
instruments, discuss their application in Croatia and perspectives
for the signing of other conventions.
Participants of the meeting stressed the significance of
conventions as a part of European standards in the light of
Croatia's activities aimed at joining the European Union.
