ZAGREB, May 30 (Hina) - A speech Croatian President Stjepan Mesic delivered before the Sabor on the occasion of Croatia's Statehood (Independence) Day found positive response of other Croatian high-ranking officials. "I am satisfied
with the speech of the President which reflects our joint stand," said Premier Ivica Racan adding that he had expected the support that President Mesic offered to the Government in his address to the national parliament on Tuesday. We are together at the same path. The speech can be easily understood in the political sense. Speculations about differences cannot stand and it is another matter why we are seeking best solutions, Racan concluded. According to Sabor Speaker Zlatko Tomcic, it is particularly encouraging that Mesic, who still enjoys great presidential powers, has supported the Government and Constitutional changes the aim of which is to reduce his powers
ZAGREB, May 30 (Hina) - A speech Croatian President Stjepan Mesic
delivered before the Sabor on the occasion of Croatia's Statehood
(Independence) Day found positive response of other Croatian high-
ranking officials.
"I am satisfied with the speech of the President which reflects our
joint stand," said Premier Ivica Racan adding that he had expected
the support that President Mesic offered to the Government in his
address to the national parliament on Tuesday.
We are together at the same path. The speech can be easily
understood in the political sense. Speculations about differences
cannot stand and it is another matter why we are seeking best
solutions, Racan concluded.
According to Sabor Speaker Zlatko Tomcic, it is particularly
encouraging that Mesic, who still enjoys great presidential
powers, has supported the Government and Constitutional changes
the aim of which is to reduce his powers.
Mesic opted for a technical speech, Tomcic said explaining that his
address was about how problems Croatia was facing now, had occurred
but this epistle also clearly showed the way out of the overall
crisis.
Katica Ivanisevic, the Speaker of the upper house - the House of
Counties - said she was glad that Croatian President directed his
attention to the future in his speech. "It is the only way to
overcome problems and go towards European integration processes"
Ivanisevic said.
She was also satisfied with the fact that Mesic called on all state
bodies to show unity, but voiced regret at his failure to assess
positively what had been done so far. The Croatian State was set up
on the foundations of the struggle of the entire people and the
leadership of (the late) President Tudjman, Ivanisevic asserted.
On Tuesday Croatia's national parliament held an extraordinary
session to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the country's
independence. Present at this joint session of both houses were
senior officials, foreign diplomats, religious dignitaries and
public figures.
