ZAGREB, April 5 (Hina) - Croatian President Stipe Mesic on
Wednesday attended the presentation of the reorganisation and
restructuring of the Defence Ministry and Armed Forces.
Following the event, Mesic told reporters he had received detailed
accounts as to what steps the Armed Forces, Defence Ministry and
General Staff were undertaking regarding the modernisation and
reorganisation of the Armed Forces so they would be used to the aim
of peace and in the interest of the Croatian state.
We heard what was necessary to do to completely carry out the
Croatian army's compatibility with NATO standards with the aim of
joining this security organisation, Mesic said.
Asked whether there had been any talk about amendments to laws
regulating the issue of defence and armed forces, Mesic said they
had spoken about laws currently in effect and which must be
implemented.
Asked whether he was satisfied with the suggested change of legal
provisions, he said he was not only satisfied but also impressed
with how the Croatian army would be modernised.
It suffices to say that the Croatian army would very quickly reach
the level of armies of NATO member-countries, which is surely the
best any country's army can be, Mesic asserted.
He expressed conviction that the appointment o the Defence
Ministry's department commissioners would soon be resolved and
there would be no contention.
According to the law, the President appoints military personnel,
department commissioners, while the government, at the suggestion
of the Defence Minister, appoints assistants, Mesic said.
For a start it is necessary to sign what had been motioned and work
on the new regulations, he said, adding there was no draft law on
defence, only a working material.
