ZAGREB, Dec 12 (Hina) - Around 180 police cadets who did not find
jobs in the Interior Ministry within six months of completing the
police high-school, have been protesting on St. Mark's Square, in
front of the government building since 13:00 hrs Wednesday,
demanding employment documents from the government.
Cadets' representatives said they would not leave the square until
they have been issued with employment documents. They claim they
were promised the documents in May, when they completed high-
school.
Ministry Interior spokeswoman Zinka Bardic said cadets have been
guaranteed employment if they completed two years of the Police
Academy. She added the ministry did not have a demand for personnel
with high school education. She assessed the conduct of the cadets,
who have been protesting in police uniforms, was impermissible.
President of the Croatian police union Dubravko Jagic, and the
president of the Association of Workers' Trade Unions of Croatia,
Boris Kunst, asked for a meeting with Minister Interior Sime Lucin,
and some of deputy premiers in order to discuss the issue.
Police cadets were to join a protest rally "For a Welfare Croatia,
and not Croatia of Welfare Cases," held in the St. Mark's Square
this afternoon. They arrived late as they held talks with the police
director Ranko Ostojic for a long time.
Because they did not receive any employment guarantees from
Ostojic, cadets arrived at St. Mark's Square, but the protest had
already ended.
