ZAGREB, Nov 12 (Hina) - The Zagreb police department on Monday
issued a statement saying two groups of foreign nationals attempted
to break house rules and stir up a rebellion at the Interior
Ministry's reception centre near Dugo Selo, but the police
established order and initiated criminal proceedings against the
rebels.
Demanding their release from the centre and departure from Croatia,
a group of 17 foreign nationals (13 Algerians, two Tunisians, and
two Israeli nationals from the area of the Palestinian self-
government), offered passive resistance by refusing to take food
and disobeying orders of the centre's officials.
They told the police they neither wanted to stay in Croatia nor
return to their countries of origin and that they needed a week to
leave Croatia.
The rebels told the police they had come to Croatia via Turkey and
Bulgaria carrying false documents. Each of them spent US$3,500 for
the journey, the police statement read.
At the same time, a group of five Romanian nationals locked
themselves in a room in the same centre and set a blanket on fire,
demanding to urgently meet with Romanian Embassy representatives
and be issued travel documents for their return to Romania.
Since the incident was a serious breach of the centre's house rules
and threatened the safety of police officials, the police, acting
in line with their powers, restored order and opened an
investigation in the case.
