BELGRADE, Nov 12 (Hina) - Members of a rebel Serbian special police
unit on Monday afternoon removed the barricades they put up at 6 am
today near the "Sava" congress hall at the Beograd-Novi Beograd
highway and announced a press conference for Tuesday.
In a column of 21 vehicles, including armoured transporters and
all-terrain vehicles, the police set out towards Novi Sad, i.e.
their base at Kula, in Vojvodina.
The police unit, known as the Red Berets, started their protest on
Friday, putting up several blocks on roads leading to their
training range and subsequently on the highway connecting Belgrade
and Novi Sad.
The special police have requested the resignation of Serbian
Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic, because he reportedly duped
them into arresting two persons from Obrenovac "for committing
grave criminal acts". The two men are the Banovic brothers, who were
immediately handed over to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague for
crimes committed in Keratem prison camp near Prijedor in 1992.
Following the arrests, the Red Berets organised a rebellion
demanding the adoption of a law which would define Belgrade's
relations with the Hague war crimes tribunal.
The rebel police claim they do not recognise the Hague tribunal but
demand that the legal procedure be clearly defined.
Despite the nine-hour-long blockade of the highway, there were no
incidents. Some 100 Red Berets were under full war equipment, armed
and wearing camouflage uniforms with bullet-proof vests.
