ZAGREB, July 17 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Tuesday
continued a session with a discussion on a motion submitted by the
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) parliamentary bench on the holding
of a referendum.
The voting has been delayed until 15.00 hours.
The HDZ and the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) parliamentary
benches are not satisfied with conclusions drafted by an interparty
working group, therefore they will insist on their own.
They demand the government to suspend its decision on the
extradition of indicted Croatian Army generals, based on two sealed
indictment from the Hague tribunal.
The HDZ also demands that a constitutional law on cooperation with
the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
(ICTY) be amended by excluding the implementation of the objective
commanding responsibility.
The HSP demanded the holding of a referendum at which citizens would
decide on the forms of cooperation with the ICTY:
The extraordinary session was continued with a discussion on the
HDZ's motion on the holding of a referendum, based on 400,000
signatures, aiming at passing a law under which Croatian Homeland
War soldiers would be treated the same as all members of the anti-
fascist armies after World War II, namely that Homeland War
soldiers could not be prosecuted for possible war crimes.
On behalf of the HDZ, Vladimir Seks reminded the Constitution
regulated that a referendum could be held on all important issues,
should 10 percent of the total number of voters request that.
Representatives of the parliament's majority believe that the
initiative was not in line with the Constitution, which specifies
the issues about which a referendum could be held.
