ZAGREB, July 13 (Hina) - In an emergency procedure on Friday, the Croatian parliament passed amendments to a law on special tax on alcohol, under which the excise taxes on a litre of pure alcohol dropped from 80 to 60 kuna. In line
with the adopted amendments, excise taxes are the same as in the period before June 2000. The Finance Ministry, which submitted the motion, explained that increased excise taxes significantly lowered alcohol production and sale. Higher excise taxes failed to decrease alcohol demand as expected, and it only strengthened the black market. The parliament has forwarded government's motion on a law on cooperatives to the third reading, to which the parliament's Legislation Committee expressed a series of complaints. Until the government-proposed law is passed, the law on cooperatives, proposed by the parliaments' Legislation Committee, and passed in Friday's emergency procedure, will be in force.
