ZAGREB, July 10 (Hina) - The passing of a decision on an economic
belt in the Croatian Adriatic has been postponed until the end of
March 2000, by which time the government should expedite
negotiations with neighbours on all unsolved demarcation issues,
most parliamentary benches concluded on Tuesday.
Last week MPs welcomed an initiative by the opposition's Croatian
Party of Rights (HSP) to declare such a belt. Most, however,
inclined to the government's stance that nothing can be done
unilaterally as it might lead to unnecessary tensions with Italy,
Slovenia, and Yugoslavia.
The Foreign Ministry should make an analysis of the impact the
decision might have on relations with neighbours.
The benches concluded today the government should also further
analyse the actual state of the biological and fish stock in the
Adriatic, the domestic and foreign catch, as well as estimate the
means that will be necessary to ensure a quality supervision and
protection in the part of the Adriatic Croatia would declare its
economic belt.
Parliament should vote in coming days.
Croatia's territorial waters cover 34,000 square kilometres. An
economic belt would provide an additional 21,000 as well as
management over that part of the Adriatic.
Fishing in the part of the Adriatic considered the open sea is has
gone out of control, with the Italians leading in the catch,
although fishing boats from other Mediterranean countries, even
from Japan and Korea, also come.
