ZAGREB, Jan 10 (Hina) - Zagreb police have continued an
investigation into the case of Sinisa Filipovic, a quack volunteer
doctor, with the aim of establishing the responsibility of the
hospital staff, police representatives told reporters on
Wednesday.
The Croatian Health Ministry has been informed about the case and
the police have called on all patients who were given medical
assistance by the quack doctor while he was working at Zagreb's
hospitals 'Sestre milosrdnice' and 'Dubrava', to contact the
police.
The police yesterday pressed criminal charges with the Zagreb State
Prosecutor's Office against Filipovic, who is suspected of medical
quackery, the forging of documents and impersonating.
During 2000, Filipovic worked at 'Dubrava' hospital on a voluntary
basis, impersonating a fifth year student at Zagreb's Medical
Faculty. After he was recognised by a student from his secondary
medical school, he left the hospital. Before his voluntary work at
Dubrava, Filipovic forged a stamp confirming he was a Medical
Faculty student.
In mid-September Filipovic transferred to 'Sestre milosrdnice'
hospital, where he forged a facsimile with the title of surgeon and
entered into the hospital's computer terminal data saying he
graduated from the Atlanta Medical Faculty in 2000 and earned his
master's degree at Zagreb's Medical Faculty. He worked as a
volunteer, did minor operations, assisted other doctors and wrote
histories of disease until the end of November last year.
Among else, he would wait in front of the emergency room entrance in
a white overcoat for ambulances to arrive and then enter the room
together with the patient and join the medical team, it was said.
The police have established that Filipovic forged documents on
completed medical education at the Atlanta Medical Faculty as well
as a document confirming his master's degree from Zagreb's Medical
Faculty.
Presuming that he would be exposed by the hospital staff, Filipovic
left the hospital and, after having read an article about the quack
doctor in the papers, turned himself in to the police.
