According to Minister Radimir Cacic, this sector employed about
10,000 workers in the past six months, and the employment offices
had lists of about 40,000 (construction) workers who "either do not
want to work or want to have a job near their place of residence."
Commenting on the employment of foreign nationals, the HNS official
said this referred mostly to several thousand workers who came from
Bosnia-Herzegovina and who had dual citizenship.
He added that in the "election campaign (before 2000 ballot) the HNS
did not promise to cut the number of jobless registered in the
employment offices by 200,000 but it promised to create so many new
jobs."
According to figures presented by Cacic, the number of the
unemployed decreased by 40,000 in the past six months, and in early
autumn, for the first time in the past 20 years, the overall
unemployment was cut.
He asserted that "in Croatia there is enough money, but the country
is lacking in programmes and entrepreneurs".
