NEW YORK, Nov 27 (Hina) - The U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday
began a discussion on this year's report on the work of the
organisation's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), about which
the Council's chairman, Croatian Ambassador Ivan Simonovic, spoke
in his introductory speech. #L#
He recalled some of the most important sessions and issues with
which the ECOSOC dealt with during 2002, especially conferences in
Monterrey and Johannesburg.
Simonovic stressed the necessity of a discussion on human
resources, an agreement on fighting the AIDS/HIV virus and
education, and in this context, the connection and coordination of
the work of non-governmental, state and international
organisations.
Simonovic advocated the strengthening of the ECOSOC's role in the
prevention of conflicts and establishment of peace, as well as a
more tight cooperation between two of the most important UN's
bodies, the Security Council and the ECOSOC.
Based on his experience as chairman of the ECOSOC of one year,
Simonovic suggested improvement measures of the Council's work,
especially of its Bureau, and proposed the continuation of
cooperation with international financial institutions.
