The Sunday presidential election is a repeat vote. The previous
vote, an October runoff, failed because less than the required 50
percent of the 6.5 million voters cast ballots. This time it is
necessary only for the first round that at least a half of the
electorate go to the polls. The polling stations were open at 07.00
and will be closed at 08.00 pm.
The three contenders who are running in the presidential race are
the incumbent Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica, Serb Radical
leader Vojislav Seselj, and Borislav Pelevic, the chief of the
Party of Serb Unity, established by the late notorious mobster
Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan.
The term of the incumbent Serbian President, Milan Milutinovic, an
ICTY indictee, expires on 5 January 2003.
In case of the turnout lower than required in the first round of the
repeated vote, the parliament's chairwoman, Natasa Micic, will be
the acting president of Serbia until the new presidential
election.
