reporters in Zagreb on Wednesday. #L#
"The report is absolutely unfair towards Croatia because the claims
in it can be easily checked and do not reflect the situation in
Croatia," Matesa said.
He reminded that Croatia was mentioned in the report in a negative
context with regard to the protection of national minorities,
relations with Slovenia, particularly regarding Piran Bay, and
cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
Matesa said that during a discussion at the Sub-Committee the
delegation explained Croatia's stand on said matters and
acquainted participants in the session with the actual state of
affairs. The Croatian and Slovene delegations protested strongly
and dismissed claims in the report that their border dispute was
motivated by nationalism, Matesa said.
Matesa further said that the representative of the French
delegation then requested that the part of the report referring to
Croatia be changed to Croatia's advantage and his proposal was
accepted. The report will be publicised and become available to
reporters in the next few days, Matesa said.
The Croatian parliamentary delegation submitted several
amendments, including an amendment mentioning Croatia as one of
candidates in the next round of NATO enlargement, the delegation's
head Viktor Broz said. The amendment was adopted, he added.
