According to the report, Croatia has 6,736 registered drug addicts,
which is 29% more than in 2000. More than half of them are not
included in any treatment programme.
According to available data, compared to 2000 there has been an 18%
increase in the number of drug addicts, particularly in Pula,
Zagreb, and Rijeka. The number of drug addicts in Split, which until
recently was the city with the largest number of addicts, has
dropped by 22% thanks to intensive work with addicts.
The report also points to a 30% increase in the number of marijuana
and ecstasy consumers among adolescents aged between 15 and 20. The
use of heavier drugs has been reported in this age group as well.
The parliament also adopted a decision binding the government to
ensure funds in the state budget for the support of non-
governmental associations for drug addiction treatment, and to
draw up an education programme.
The government is also obliged to complete the organisation of
addiction treatment centres by the end of this year.
MPs endorsed a bill of amendments to the law on pension funds and a
bill of amendments to the law on the protection of military and
civil war invalids.
