Incumbent Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek has won 44.79 percent of
the vote and former state prosecutor Barbara Brezigar 31.05
percent, according to more than half the votes counted thus far, the
state election commission said on Sunday evening.
Nationalist Zmago Jelincic has won a surprisingly high number of
votes, almost nine percent, while former central bank governor
Franc Arhar has won a little over seven percent. The other five
presidential candidates lag far behind.
The turnout at this latest presidential ballot has been slightly
lower than in 1997. It is assumed this was due to the nice weather
which urged many people to have a picnic.
