Polls from Pop TV showed Drnovsek leading with either 45 percent of
the vote ahead of the main opposition candidate Barbara Brezigar
with 26.8 percent.
First official results, based on a small number of votes counted,
suggested Drnovsek, leader of the centre-left Liberal Democrats,
led with 47.7 percent ahead of Brezigar with 27 percent.
Brezigar is running as an independent candidate but is supported by
the opposition centre-right Social Democrats and conservative New
Slovenia party.
"I thanked the voters for supporting me and I hope to receive even
greater support and victory in the second round," Drnovsek said
after the announcement of preliminary results.
Brezignar said she was happy about the results which showed that
"Slovenia is ready for new people in politics".
The new president will replace Milan Kucan, who has been head of
state of the former Yugoslav republic for 12 years and was unable
under the constitution to run again.
