ZAGREB, Nov 6 (Hina) - The majority of Croatian citizens believe
gender is not important for becoming the President of the Republic
or director of a major company, according to the results of a public
opinion poll released on Wednesday. #L#
The poll included 1,000 people and was conducted by the GfK Market
Research Centre.
Fifty-seven percent of respondents said the gender of the president
of state was unimportant. Thirty-two percent have more confidence
in a male president and nine percent in a woman. Seven years ago a
poll showed that 37 percent of respondents saw gender as
unimportant for the president's office. Fifty-seven percent of
those had more confidence in a man and six percent in a woman.
As for the gender of the president of a political party, this year 66
percent of respondents said it was unimportant as against 48
percent in 1995. Twenty-three percent have more confidence in a man
and ten percent in a woman. In 1995 this ratio was 43 to eight
percent in favour of men.
Sixty-one percent of respondents see the gender of the director of a
major company as irrelevant as against 50 percent from a previous
poll. Twenty-seven percent would rather see a man on that position
(earlier it was 39 percent), while the number of those in favour of a
woman has remained the same - ten percent.
Gender is least important in university professors (73 as against
62 percent before) or medical specialists (69 as against 58
percent).
