The IBO programme is a comprehensive education programme which
lasts 12 years and is divided into three programmes - Primary Years
Programme, which lasts five years, Middle Years Programme, which
also lasts five years, and Diploma Programme, which lasts two
years.
The principal of "Matija Gubec" primary school, Mirjana Pivac, said
at today's ceremony that preparations for the opening of the IBO
school had lasted four years.
Education and Sports Minister Vladimir Strugar said that changes to
current laws had made it possible to organise classes in one of the
world languages with an international curriculum. The foundations
of the IBO school had been laid back in 1995, with the start of
English-language classes for the children of foreigners and
diplomats, he said.
"We want a school system which is governed by pluralism and
bilingualism and by opening this school we confirm that we
understand the processes that surround us," Strugar said.
The IBO programme promotes a holistic approach to education,
including the teaching of five subjects - learning approach,
service to community, health and social education, environment,
and homo faber.
Special emphasis is placed on the understanding of other cultures,
customs and ideas and the development of interculturalism and
tolerance, it was said at the opening of the school.
