candidate for one of the 18 judges of the Permanent International

Josipovic was chosen on the basis of public competition and the
decision to nominate him was adopted at today's closed-door
session.
Each of the 81 countries which so far have ratified the tribunal's
statute has the right to nominate its candidate for the post.
Ivo Josipovic was born in 1957 in Zagreb. He graduated from the
Zagreb Law School in 1980. He also holds a degree from the Academy of
Music.
He passed the bar examination in 1982 and started his career at the
Zagreb County Court. Since 1983 he has been working at the Zagreb
Law School as an associate professor of criminal procedural law.
He has perfected his knowledge at prominent legal institutes abroad
on a number of occasions and participated in the work of many
domestic and foreign bodies on drawing up a series of laws related
to criminal law. Among other things, he represented Croatia at the
International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in
the so-called subpoena case.
Josipovic is Croatia's legal representative at the International
Court of Justice at The Hague.
Apart from his legal expertise, Josipovic is well known in musical
circles as a composer of classical music.
