The founders of the school believed that everybody had the right to
be healthy, to have equal access to health services and that nobody
should be labelled because of being ill or infected, Mesic said at
the ceremony held in the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
The current head of the school, Stipe Oreskovic, said the research
and promotion of health remained the main task of this school in the
new century.
Oreskovic added that persons infected with AIDS and T.B. were
invited at the ceremony by this school, which was thus trying to
develop tolerance and show respect to the dignity of human beings.
The World Health Organisation's European Office head, Marc Danzon,
spoke about the international reputation of this school and its
founder, Professor Andrija Stampar, who had been one of initiators
for the set-up of the WHO after the Second World War.
In 1946, Stampar was the chairman of the interim commission which
served as the WHO until the formal establishment of the
Organisation in 1948. Stampar drew up the constitution of the WHO
and in 1948 he chaired the first WHO assembly in Geneva. Stampar was
also the first deputy chairman of the UN Economic and Social
Council.
Health Minister Andro Vlahusic said the Public Health School
"Andrija Stampar" helped Croatia to become a leading south-eastern
European country in public health.
The medal "Andrija Stampar" was awarded to a Briton, Alexander
Macara, for his efforts in the promotion of public health.
