The trade between Croatia and China is at the moment on a low level,
and Croatia's imports from that country total about 140 million
dollars annually, while exports are only some two million dollars.
Tomcic said that during the visit he and a parliamentary delegation
paid to China, they told their Chinese hosts that Zagreb was not
satisfied with the current commodity exchange, but the Sabor head
admitted "we are to blame". In this context he said Croatia must
consider possibilities for offering concrete projects interesting
for the Chinese side.
He added that the parliamentary diplomacy proved to be successful
relating to the case of an indictment the UN war crimes tribunal
issued against Croatian General Janko Bobetko.
"We are absolutely sure that the Chinese understand our problems
and that they support our right to use legal means to protect the
dignity of the nation, state, the Homeland Defence War and
individuals," Tomcic stressed.
For Tomcic it is very indicative that the senior Chinese officials
offered support to Croatia regarding the case of Gen. Bobetko.
The Croatian parliamentary delegation commenced its visit with the
arrival in Shanghai at the beginning of this week. The central
political event was the tour to Beijing where Tomcic held talks with
the Chinese People's Congress President, Li Peng, and Defence
Minister Chi Haotian.
On Saturday, Tomcic and the delegation toured Hong Kong and met the
local Deputy Prime Minister, Donald Tshang, and the president of
the law-making council, Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai.
