ZAGREB, Oct 7 (Hina) - A society for the protection of Croatian
consumers on Monday described yesterday's statement by the social
welfare minister, who claimed that the Croatian Power Industry
(HEP) should be held responsible for the unjustified rise in the
price of electricity, as a cheap pre-election trick. #L#
The society, called "Consumer", on Monday forwarded an open letter
to the government and Minister Davorko Vidovic, criticising
Vidovic for failing to ask a clear calculation of the effect of a new
tariff system in power prices on the standard of citizens in June,
when a Deputy Prime Minister, Slavko Linic, announced that "the
power price must go up".
The society blamed Vidovic for failing to ask for such a calculation
on 29 August, when the government without any discussion adopted
the new tariff system.
The society believes that expressing his stand a day after a protest
rally of consumers in Rijeka is just a bid to exempt himself from his
own responsibility for failing to react when he should have
listened to the voice of the public and considered the calculations
of prices which were made by this society.
