central Carpathian Mountains. #L#
Instead of taking a tour of Romanian castles, Mesic was to hold
talks with the Croat minority in western Romania. At the suggestion
of the Romanian side, however, the meeting was cancelled for
security reasons.
Several days ago, several automatic guns were stolen from military
barracks near Temisvar, so Bucharest suggested that the visit be
cancelled.
A Romanian communist and sensationalist paper tied the case with
the preparation for an assassination attempt on Mesic., stating
that the weapons were stolen by members of the "Tigers" brigade of
Serb rebel leader Arkan who was killed in Belgrade.
More serious Romanian dailies on Saturday write Romanian soldiers
had some minor internal quarrels and have nothing to do with Mesic's
visit, describing the story of an attempted assassination as
"abracadabra hype".
During his visit to Bucharest, Mesic spoke with the entire Romanian
state leadership and representatives of the Croat minority, and
took part in the work of the Croatian-Romanian economic Forum.
