According to last year's census, 6,800 Croats are living in the
western Romanian county of Karas-Severin. Romanian Croats are
believed to be the second oldest Croatian diaspora, and because of
the exceptional maintained language and culture, two villages with
a Croatian majority, Karasevo and Klokotic, had received awards
from the Croatian Emigrants' Society.
In Karasevo, there is a Romanian-Croat bilingual secondary primary
and school, and Croats even have their MP in the Romanian
parliament.
Romanian Croats enjoyed all rights guaranteed by the Law on the
Protection of Minorities, and received US$90, 000 per year from the
Romanian government, and about EUR7,000 from the Croatian
government.
