Addressing the press in Pula, Kajin said that the issue that
burdened Croatian-Slovenian relations and in particular fishing
relations was an Agreement on Cross-Border Traffic and Co-
operation and not the initialled agreement on the border.
If Tuesday's agreement on a temporary regime in Piran By is not
implemented, then those who claim that there are going to be
elements to deteriorate relations between the two countries will be
right, Kajin said.
In that case, residents in border regions on both sides of the
border will be in an impossible position because, as Kajin said, the
construction of border crossings will be halted and the Shengen
regime reinstated. That is why, he added, Zagreb instead of
Ljubljana needs to negotiate with Strasbourg.
Nothing spectacular could have been done during the Racan-Drnovsek
meeting, however, it is better that the two premiers spoke instead
of cannon fire on both sides or that Slovene MP's demanded the
introduction of visas for Croatian citizens travelling to
Slovenia, Kajin said.
According to him, Slovene fishermen were illegally catching two
tonnes of fish each year in the contentious area of Piran Bay.
