At least 47 demonstrators and 11 police were injured and 20 persons
were arrested in the Decani protests, which demanded the release of
five senior officials of the former Kosovo Liberation Army.
UNMIK spokeswoman Susan Manuel said she understood the
dissatisfaction with the recent arrests, but added that room had to
be made for law enforcement in Kosovo.
Her message to Kosovo's residents was that if they wanted order and
justice, criminals had to be punished.
The Kosovo Committee on the Protection of Human Rights and
Freedoms, on the other hand, pointed to human rights violations
during what it said had been a rough police intervention.
Covering the protests, Albanian print media criticised Kosovo's
institutions for not commenting on the arrests of former officials
who are suspected of war crimes.
