The match, which was supposed to be a friendly game, proceeded
well.
Unlike the players, the fans were rowdy, the loudest being those
from the Bosnian Serb entity who shouted nationalist slogans and
insults throughout the game.
Probably provoked by such behaviour and the poor playing of their
team, the Bosnian supporters waited for the Yugoslav fans outside
the stadium, showering them with stones and bottles.
Police intervened, but some 20 fans were injured, including one
seriously, 24-year-old Aleksandar Kovacevic from Nis, Yugoslavia,
who lost an eye.
A spokeswoman for the UN Mission to Bosnia, Kirsten Haupt, said on
Thursday that local police did their job well.
Security at the match was 250-strong, including special police
units.
Nineteen police were injured, including two seriously.
Eight of the most aggressive fans were put under arrest.
