ZAGREB, Aug 3 (Hina) - The total number of fires in Croatia climbed by 84.4 percent in the first six months of 2002 compared to the same period in 2001, and the death toll of those accidents was 18 while 120 people were injured, the
interior ministry reported.

According to the ministry's report, there were 5,364 fires in the
first half of this year, and 1,789 of them were in buildings, while
3,584 were in the open air.
The direct material damage climbed by 58.4 percent to 92.3 million
kuna (12.64 million euros).
Regarding the cause of the blazes, 4,056 broke out due to
negligence, while 141 were the cases of arson.
The interior ministry has asked the government to ensure additional
13 million kuna (EUR1.78 million) for the implementation of special
fire-fighting measures until the end of 2002.
So far, 10 million kuna (EUR1.36 million) have been allocated for
this purpose, but this amount is insufficient, the ministry said.
In 2001, Croatia allocated 22.86 million kuna (EUR3.13 million) for
the fire-fighting measures.
