ZAGREB, August 2 (Hina) - There were no injuries reported in a fire
that broke out on Thursday night at about 7.20 p.m, in a warehouse
within the "Puto" waste incinerating complex in the Zagreb suburb
of Jakusevac and the causes of the fire and material damages caused
will be ascertained following a police investigation which began at
about 11 a.m. Friday morning, the Zagreb police reported. #L#
A spokeswoman for the Zagreb police, Stanka Saraja said at a press
conference that the fire had engulfed a covered warehouse complex
within the incinerating plant and quickly spread to the warehouse
itself.
It then engulfed about 100 tonnes of technological wastes stored in
barrels used in the incinerating process to enhance burning.
The fire encompassed an area of about 50 square metres and did not
reach the incinerator, Saraja said.
As soon as the fire was reported, professional fire-fighters were
deployed to the scene. The fire was fought by 56 firemen with 12 fire
trucks with a further 70 volunteer fire-fighters who joined later
with another 14 vehicles followed by four water tanks from the City
Waterworks with eight men; ten tankers from the city's corporation
cleansing department with 20 men and a forklift to make a path to the
fire.
After the fire was localised on Thursday night, representatives of
the City Council, the Ministry of Environment Protection, the
Centre for Public Health and the Toxicological Institute visited
the scene taking samples and measuring the level of smog in the air.
This process continued during the day.
The police spokeswoman mentioned that the investigation could take
some time because it was difficult to determine the cause of the
fire.
Later in the day it was announced that the investigation was
postponed for Saturday due to the danger of the collapse of the
burnt roof.
An Environment Ministry inspection on Friday banned "Puto" company
to accept any new waste during the day.
The Environment Protection Ministry noted that a temporary report
indicated that no toxic substances were concentrated in the air
that could be determined dangerous.
