NEW YORK, July 23 (Hina) - The UN Security Council on Tuesday
considered the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the
former Yugoslavia (ICTY), at a closed-door session. #L#
ICTY President Claude Jorda, Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte and
the tribunal's administrator, Hans Holthius, acquainted
ambassadors of 15 Security Council member-countries of the
conclusions from the summer sitting, which ICTY judges held last
week.
A spokesman for the UN, Fred Eckhard, told reporters that being
conditional on the cooperation of the international community, on
arrests and extradition of suspects as well as on the financing of
the tribunal, investigations might be completed in about two years,
and the first-phase trials could be over by 2008 or 2009.
After its closed session, the Security Council held a formal
session at which it harmonised two presidential statements. One
statement refers to the adoption a recent report on the tribunal's
work. The other statement expresses support to the tribunal's
intention of being concentrated on processes against civil,
military and paramilitary leaders suspected of war crimes and
violations of the international humanitarian law, rather than
against low-profile perpetrators.
