International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is marked on June
26, commemorating the day when 15 years ago the Convention Against
Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or
Punishment came into force.
Only 129 of the 189 UN member-countries have become signatories to
the Convention while many who are signatories have not ensured its
full implementation and still allow torture, AIH said in a
statement said.
AIH criticised Croatia's prime minister for not having time to
receive its delegation today and welcome its campaign against
torture.
AIH is "concerned" about this sort of behaviour and believes the
prime minister is sending a wrong message to the Croatian public and
not contributing to the protection or promotion of human rights in
Croatia, the statement said.
