According to the same sources, during talks with Croatian Prime
Minister Ivica Racan, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan accepted
Croatia's standpoints.
During Wednesday's talks, Racan informed Annan of Croatia's
standpoints on the situation in the region. Racan told Annan that
the current situation on Prevlaka and relations between Croatia and
the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia were quite different than at the
time the UNMOP was established.
Racan said that both Zagreb and Belgrade were interested in seeing
open issues solved through an agreement.
The confirmation of this is expected as early as next month when a
joint protocol on a temporary solution for the border between
Croatia and Montenegro should be forwarded to the UN.
"We are under the impression that the UN Secretary General has
positively accepted the explanations and standpoints and that is
why we are optimistic that the UNMOP mandate would end this year,"
Racan said.
Annan expressed interest in the return of refugees to Croatia and
Croatia's cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for
the former Yugoslavia.
Racan invited Annan to visit Croatia, which the UN Secretary-
General gladly accepted. The date of the visit will be set later.
After the talks in the UN headquarters, members of the Croatian
delegation paid tribute to the victims of the September 11
terrorist attack.
