HSS WANTS TO BE FACTOR OF STABILITY IN COALITION - TOMCIC

ZAGREB, June 15 (Hina) - The Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) wants to be a factor of stability in the ruling coalition, but the coalition has been increasingly unsuccessful, it was said at a session of the HSS Central Committee on Saturday. #L# Discussing the party's political activities and relations in the coalition, the Committee agreed that the party was stable and homogenous, however, the ruling coalition was growing weak. The coalition's activities are slow, there is lack of agreement and understanding among the coalition partners, Tomcic said, adding that the coalition had failed to solve two crucial problems - economic revival and unemployment. The HSS Central Committee today did not discuss a claim made by the Social Democrats at the last parliamentary session that the coalition parties "are forming an informal coalition with the HDZ". Tomcic said the accusation was absurd and unnecessary. The HSS is not negotiating changing the coalition, but it will not give up the right to criticism, he said. The HSS objects that the important projects it has been supporting, such as a farming strategy, a law on farming incentives, and changes to the education system are being ignored. The party expects those issues to be solved by the summer break, Tomcic said. The party also objects that the government is too slow in initiating concrete business projects and that the Ministry of Crafts and Small and Medium-Scale Businesses is not in the centre of its attention, although its contribution to reducing unemployment is significant. The coalition has been unsuccessful also in resolving personnel issues, but Tomcic believes this problem is not so important for the public. Tomcic believes that more worrying than a drop in the coalition's rating is an increase in the number of undecided voters, which he believes shows lack of belief in quick changes. The HSS today adopted a new statute and leadership. (hina) rml
