"Role and Contribution of the United Nations in Preventing
Terrorism" ended in Vienna on Tuesday. #L#
The conference was attended by well-respected international
experts involved with the phenomenon of terrorism, diplomats and
delegations from over 70 countries who discussed international
conventions and protocols, the implementation of existing UN
resolutions - particularly the Security Council's Resolution 1373
- and the role of international cooperation and technical
assistance in thwarting terrorism.
Also discussed was regional and sub-regional cooperation in the
global action against terrorism and the role of the UN Office for
Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP) headquarted in Vienna.
The role of the ODCCP is to prevent terrorism, the newly appointed
chief director of the UN office in Vienna and executive director of
ODCCP, Antonio Mario Costa, told journalists in Vienna on Tuesday.
"Croatia is a signatory to all significant UN conventions relating
to terrorism. It has also concluded 32 bilateral agreements on
cooperation with other states, particularly with neighbouring
countries and the CEI relating to the prevention of organised crime
and terrorism and drug abuse," said Branko Turic, the chief of
Croatian Interior Ministry's Terrorist and War Crimes Section.
A day-long seminar is to be held in Zagreb on June 6, entitled
"Protection from Terrorism and other Forms of Violence". In
September Zagreb will also host an international symposium
entitled "Terrorism and Security in the 21st Century - Southeast
Europe and the World".
