The United States sees Croatia as a staunch friend and reliable
partner in the defence of Europe from future terrorist attacks,
says the statement, which represents the official stance of the US
government.
The citizens of Croatia and the US are united in the war against
terrorism, reads the statement.
It recalls that only a few days after the terrorist attacks on the US
last September, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic called for the
establishment of a world coalition against terrorism, saying it was
necessary to set up a new organisation of countries defending
civilisation from terrorism.
The statement further recalls that Croatia was a victim of
terrorism back in 1992, when a suicide bomber blew up a police
station in Rijeka in retaliation for the arrest of Talat Fuad
Kassem.
Croatia developed a strong partnership with the US as regards
defence issues during the 1990s wars in the Balkans, reads the
statement.
It concludes by saying the US welcomes the Croatian government's
promise that it will help in ensuring stability and security in the
Balkans by stepping up security on Croatian borders and normalising
relations with neighbours.
