Assistant deputy state secretary Robert Maggi and an official from
the humanitarian mine clearance programme in the State Department,
Donald Patierno, told Vidovic that Croatia was the only country
faced with land mines that has a national plan and programme for
mine clearance. The Mine Centre is a specialised company involved
with removing land mines and 84 percent of the cost of these
activities are covered from the state budget.
The USA on Thursday paid US$4 million through its ITF centre in
Ljubljana earmarked for several projects in the Zadar hinterland,
Kopacki rt and other locations in Croatia.
Vidovic informed his collocutors of a programme intended to open a
regional Welfare Centre for child land mine victims as an annex to
the Rovinj Children's Hospital. It is expected that the US
government will assist with the realisation of this project with a
donation of about half a million dollars.
