Following a two-day meeting of the steering committee of the Peace
Implementation Council, which was held in Sarajevo at the level of
political directors of the foreign ministries of the most
influential Western countries and Russia, Petritsch told
journalists that the announced measures could be expected within
the next few days.
The Austrian diplomat said that the steering committee fully backed
the proposal to set up a high judicial council that would appoint
judges and prosecutors.
This would enable the replacement of a large number of judges and
prosecutors at all levels, thus decreasing the influence of
politics and corruption on the judiciary.
A special institute will be set up to train judges and prosecutors
and this will be followed by a complete reform of the criminal and
civil legislature.
According to Petritsch, the steering committee once again welcomed
the recently adopted constitutional changes in the country's
entities, confirming that only those political leaders who had co-
operated in the process could expect to be treated as partners by
the international community.
Petritsch is to hand over his duty as High Representative on May 27
to Britain's Paddy Ashdown.
